Reliable DNS resolvers

Block malicious sites, ads and trackers

DNS is an abbreviation of Domain Name System. You can think of it as the phone book of the Internet. A DNS translates domain names (such as www.aboutprivacy.nl) into IP addresses so that browsers can load Internet resources.

Each time you use a DNS server, it records your IP address (and therefore your approximate location), the domain name you looked up, the current time and the name of your Internet service provider. Many organizations that run DNS servers understand that there is money in those logs. Even Google (dns server 8.8.8.8), of course, has known this since the beginning of time.

If you do notset up your ownDNS servers (manually) on your computer or router, your DNS requests willrunon your Internet provider’s DNS servers .

Changing the DNS servers is usually a good idea:

  • It improves your Internet speed and web page load time
  • More stable connection
  • Provides greater online security and privacy
  • Blocks ads and trackers
